i pulled out a couple of gardening books and started making lists this week of what to plant to eat and attract more bees, birds, and butterflies this autumn.

and we've been tackling some back yard projects. we continue to try and pack as much into our little space as possible. after another summer of planting, it became clear that we need more of the sunny space for plantings. our yard is split level and the upper portion has been mostly unused since the failure of veggie plantings in years past (not enough sun). so we did a little rotating. another section of the now-dead grass will become expanded planting area.

the toys were moved up to the previously unused upper section of the yard. i love this, because now i can easily see the kids from the kitchen.

we used concrete blocks (of which we have many, because the entire yard used to be concrete) to build a fire pit in the now-cleared lower portion of our yard.
and last, but certainly not least, mike enclosed the area under the deck for storage. didn't he do a beautiful job? he used wood that his dad helped him remove from a local building. as gorgeous as it is, it will be covered under paint soon, because the wood is not safe to be exposed with the kids around. (votes, please...cream colored paint like the deck railing or chocolate brown like the deck and steps?)
next up? before and afters of the exterior paint job, finally and currently happening to our home this week!
